Congratulations You are Engaged! Now what? Things to do first.

Recently engaged?  From all of us at BE Wedding Entertainment Congratulations!!  The day you become engaged is such a whirl wind of emotions full of excitement and can also be a time of confusion.    What do we do first?  What’s next?  Hopefully you will find some helpful hints to help make it a little less confusing!

1.  Insure your Ring
After you have called your family, friends, and everyone you know telling them all about the great news you want to call your insurance provider to be sure to put that pretty ring on a policy.  Generally speaking you can add the ring to your homeowners policy or renters policy.  You will need an appraisal in order to get the ring insured but most jewelers supply an appraisal when they purchase the ring.  If you do not happen to have homeowners or renters insurance you can call up an insurance company and take out a new policy.

2.  Build Your Wedding Binder
After you have taken some time to enjoy being engaged and showing off your new ring it is time to get organized and build yourself a Wedding Binder.    Unless you have hired a wedding planner this is something you will definetley need to stay organized.  This is the best way to keep track of your “To do list”, Vendors you have talked to, etc.  Yes you can buy premade wedding binder but you can also very easily and at a fraction of the cost  make one yourself.  This way you can customize it to what your needs are.  There are many resources and sites out there that tell you how to build a binder just google “Making a wedding binder” and find that site that you like best.

3.  Nail down your Budget
The first step in planning your big day is knowing what your budget is going to be.  Let’s face it there is a big difference between a 50,000 dollar wedding and a $10,000 dollar wedding.  One thing to keep in  mind is that as you plan your wedding things add up rather quickly.  So talk with your future hubby, his parents, your parents and figure out exactly what you have to spend and work with.  The last thing you want to do is enter your marriage in boatload of debt!  There are articles online you can read that help you figure out the percentage of the budget and where it should go.  Try googling ” nailing down wedding budget”.

4.  Set the date or at least the Year and the Season
The next thing you want to do is decided when and what time of year and your new fiance would like to be married.  It’s easiest to start with the year and then the season and then you can go from there to narrow it down even further to a month and a day.    This also will help when you are dealing with vendors and their availability.  One thing to keep in mind January through March are generally considered off-season weddings in most parts of the country, and having your wedding during these months can often save you some big bucks!

5.  What type of wedding do you want to have?  Get Inspired
Start browsing online sites and magazines to determine what type of wedding you would like to have.  Do you want a: vintage, more traditional, modern, offbeat, the list is endless.  It is completely up to you.  I am a true believer that with a little work in planning and creativity anyone can have the wedding of their dreams within any budget.  However, the sooner you figure this out the more time you have to put those  dreams into reality.

6.  Decide on a Venue
It is very important to take care of this early in the planning process.  If you have a certain place in mind that you have always dreamed about having your wedding at, their availability will most likely effect your wedding date.  Also, depending on the venue you may have to  match your chosen wedding theme to  the venue you have chosen.  Example, if you have chosen an old Victorian venue then you would  want your wedding to match that theme.

7.  What are my colors going to be
This is very important in the planning process.  The most easiest way to do this is to go shopping with some of your bridesmaid dresses and it would not hurt to go looking for your dress at the same time so you can make sure the bridesmaid dresses go with yours.  It could be a waste of time to be talking with vendors about anything that involves color ( such as flowers etc) until you have decided on the color scheme for your wedding.  Save yourself alot of time and headaches and pick out your color scheme then match everything to that as closely as you can.

8.  Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize
I cannot say that enough.  When working with a budget you need to know what is most important to you and your fiance and then go from their.  You may have to cut on somethings to have other things you really want.  It is important to know from the begining what is most important to you both and what is least as important to you when planning your dream wedding.  So learning what you can you want and what you can live without will help you work within your budget and have the wedding of your dreams.
